A brief history of (quite a long) time
Our current small animal veterinary practice started life as “Proctor and Brunton”, based in Poulton.
Andrew Milne joined the team in 1986 as a Veterinary assistant with Garrett Shine joining shortly after. In 1987 Andrew and Garrett bought the practice, which thus became “Milne and Shine”.
Garrett and Andrew remained business partners until 2002 when Garrett sold up and moved back to S.Ireland. These first 15 years saw the practice grow in size and stature, with it being the first practice in the area to receive the RCVS “Practice Standards” certification.
We have always provided an on-call service to be proud of, and have run a 24/7 service from the start. We have been a Veterinary nurse training centre since 1987.
The practice continued to grow and develop, and by 2007 had out-grown its main base in Poulton-le-Fylde. The search was on for a new green-field site on which to build our new purpose-built premises. After years of searching, the Norcross House site was identified, and – when it did eventually come on the market – it was purchased. However, from then, things were far from plain sailing! Planning took 18 months, and construction on-site did not begin until 2012. Funding our project proved to be very difficult, and there was an 18 month “break” in the build while we contested a massive “claw-back” claim from Lancashire County Council, which threatened to bancrupt us. Fortunately, the claw-back claim was rejected and the build could continue.
During the build the practice had to survive in 6 portacabins – and 4 years in the cabins was far from easy! We eventually opened the doors of our new purpose-build premises in Dec 2016. Since opening, the practice has grown very rapidly and now employs 8 vets and a total staff of 31. It really is a joy to work in. Our motto is “where the welfare of your pet comes first” – and this remains our primary objective. We look forward to continuing in this tradition for decades to come.
